Who We Are

Founded in 2011 under the Alberta Societies Act (Chapter S-14), we are a not-for-profit organization with a deep commitment to promoting Latin American culture, and a particular devotion to Venezuelan folklore. We bring this vision to life by championing a rich variety of artistic and cultural activities, including — but not limited to — the many voices of musical expression.

The Foundation is committed to contribute to the City's cultural diversity, while fostering the involvement in performing arts by individuals and community groups. To this end, the foundation supports the endeavours of two musical ensembles:

- Cantares Latin Choir

- La Parranda Venezolana

Our Mission

Based in Calgary, Cantares Venezuelan Cultural Foundation and its affiliates (Cantares Latin Choir and La Parranda Venezolana) are dedicated to enriching the city's vibrant multicultural fabric through the promotion and celebration of artistic expression. We believe in the power of culture to bring people together, and we are committed to fostering participation in the performing arts among individuals and community groups alike. We support a diverse range of musical ensembles and produce high-quality cultural events and activities that are welcoming and accessible to all. Through fundraising campaigns and benefit concerts, we also strive to give back to the community that inspires us.

Our Vision

Cantares Venezuelan Cultural Foundation envisions itself as the go-to destination for anyone passionate about Latin American art and culture in Calgary and throughout the Province of Alberta.

Our goal is to be a reference point for those interested on approaching to Latin American artistic and cultural expressions in the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta.

Why Us?

Board of Directors 2019-2026

Like many organizations, Cantares VCF was deeply affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted our activities and impacted our membership significantly. Rebuilding has taken great effort and dedication, and during this challenging period our registry was temporarily lost for nearly a year. We are now moving forward with a restructuring process aimed at restoring Cantares to its full potential. This year, we are excited to complete our General Assembly and elect a new Board of Directors for the 2026–2028 period — an important milestone in our renewed journey.

Carmen Galarraga

President

Carmen's love for Venezuelan culture and traditions is at the heart of everything she does. A founding member of the Cantares VCF Board of Directors, she has served as President since 2016, guided by her passion for organizing, planning, and building community.

With many years of choral singing close to her heart, Carmen also holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary — the city she has called home for over 21 years. Carmen's creativity also finds expression off the stage. A passionate fashion and jewelry designer, she lovingly dedicates her time to selecting, designing, and crafting the custom performance dresses for all of Cantares VCF's ensembles — making sure that every performance is not only heard, but remembered.

Norka Marcano

Chair

A Ph.D. in Geochemistry and one of the true pillars of Cantares VCF, Norka has been a driving force behind the Foundation from the very beginning. As former Assistant Conductor of the Cantares Latin Choir, her dedication to the Foundation's mission never wavered — even while working abroad.

Now that she is back, Norka has brought with her a burst of fresh energy and exciting new ideas that are already breathing new life into Cantares.
